Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt complained to local police after he received death threats from extortionists. The unknown callers also threatened his daughter Alia Bhatt and wife Soni Razdan.
According to Indian media reports, extortionists called Mahesh Bhatt and demanded INR 50 lakh from the filmmaker.
The veteran director initially ignored a phone call that he received on Feb 26. Sometime after the call, he received a WhatsApp message stating that if he failed to follow orders, the group will fire several rounds of bullets in Alia and his wife Soni.
The extortionist asked the director to deposit money in a bank's branch in Lucknow.
Following the threatening messages, Mahesh Bhatt registered a police complaint. The issue was later then resolved by Indian police and security was beefed up for the director's family members.
He also tweeted on the matter, saying:" A bolt from the blue in the form of an extortion call and threat to my family was nipped in the bud by the Maharashtra and UP police in tandem. Gratitude."
