Game of Thrones’ last season to have six episodes only

The eighth and final season of 'Game of Thrones' will only be six episodes long, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss revealed at SXSW in Austin on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, the series' showrunners said that they were in the process of writing the outline for GoT's final season, which will air next year.

Season seven of the show, which premieres July 16 this year, will feature seven episodes. Each of the prior seasons were 10 episodes long.

The panel was hosted by Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner, who play Arya and Sansa Stark, respectively, prompting Benioff to enjoy a bit of banter.

"We fight over who gets to write which half, who gets to kill Sansa..." he said.

"We both wanted to kill Sansa so bad," Weiss continued the joke, The Verge reported.

Benioff also revealed another interesting tidbit: British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will appear in the upcoming season seven. He has been invited to the show as a surprise for Williams, who is a fan.
