China box office to dwarf Hollywood, predicts Ang Lee

Taiwanese-born filmmaker Ang Lee predicted Friday that the Chinese film market was about to explode, not only overtaking but dwarfing the American box office in a matter of years.

The two-time Oscar winner said executives in the world's second economy used to rely on him as a bridge to Hollywood, but the newly-confident Chinese film industry no longer finds it necessary.

"It's huge, it's going to be bigger in a few years," the 62-year-old told reporters on the red carpet at the glitzy BAFTA Britannia Awards in Beverly Hills.

"In a few years it's probably going to be bigger (than the US) and then in the years to come a lot bigger. They've got many people and, most importantly, film has been lacking in the past in the culture, so it's still fresh."

PricewaterhouseCoopers projects China's box office will rise from $4.3 billion in 2014 to $8.9 billion in 2019, outstripping the US.

Hollywood studios have been looking to capitalize on the burgeoning market through partnerships with Chinese companies.

Meanwhile, Beijing has ambitions to increase China's "soft power," unleashing a wave of Chinese money into Hollywood.

Real estate developer turned media conglomerate Wanda bought "Jurassic World" creator Legendary Entertainment for $3.5 billion earlier this year.

Last month Wanda -- which snapped up US movie theatre chain AMC in 2012 for $2.6 billion -- announced it would invest in movies produced by Sony Pictures, its first deal with one of Hollywood's so-called "Big Six" studios.

Lee was the first Asian ever to win an Oscar for directing, in 2006 for gay cowboy movie "Brokeback Mountain." He went on to win again for 2012's "Life of Pi."

He was at the BAFTA LA ceremony -- which celebrates the contribution of Hollywood talent and British entertainers -- to receive the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for excellence in directing.

His war drama "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," starring Joe Alwyn, Kristen Stewart, Vin Diesel and Steve Martin, is released in the US on November 11.

Dangerous moment

Americans Jodie Foster, 53, and Samuel L. Jackson, 67, were also honored at the gala in the luxury Beverly Hilton hotel while Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brie Larson and Christopher Guest presented awards.

Among the Britons being recognized were Ewan McGregor, who starred in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, and Felicity Jones, the lead in the upcoming spin-off, "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."

Three-time Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais, 55, received the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for excellence in comedy.

American actor Simon Helberg appeared to reference Britain's anti-EU "Brexit" vote and the US presidential election when he told AFP comedy in the two countries was becoming similar -- as was politics.

"I think the Brits seem to manage to be very intellectual and cerebral at times while masquerading as being very silly," said the 35-year-old, best known for US hit comedy "The Big Bang Theory."

"So there's this depth to it, but it can also work on a silly level. Sometimes I think Americans can lean very heavily into the silly, so you get a little less of the wit on occasion.

"But you know what? It's all evening out. Our countries are both in a dangerous moment right now, so we'll see. The comedy and the political environment are all mirroring each other."

Americans decide in their presidential polls on November 8 between Democrat Hillary Clinton, who has weathered controversy over her misuse of a private email server while Secretary of State, and Republican Donald Trump, whose rhetoric on women, Muslims and immigration has polarized the electorate.

'Transformers' producers lose China legal battle: Xinhua

The Hollywood studio that made the latest "Transformers" blockbuster must pay a Chinese scenic area more than two million yuan ($300,000) because it failed to include the park's logo, state media reported.

A court in Chongqing ordered Paramount Pictures and its Beijing partner to pay the money to a park in the southwestern municipality, the official Xinhua news agency said late Thursday.

The films are wildly popular in China, with Chinese companies from milk producers to banks flocking to link their products to them, and when "Transformers: Age of Extinction" came out it became the country's highest ever grossing movie.
Some of its scenes were filmed in the gorges and caves of the Wulong Scenic Area, and the tourism group managing the park claimed that it had a product placement agreement for the logo to be shown in the footage.

It filed suit in 2014, saying that its contract had been violated and demanding 20 million yuan in compensation, reports at the time said.

Neither Paramount Pictures nor its Chinese partner 1905 Internet Technology could be reached for comment by AFP on Friday.

"Age of Extinction" was the fourth film in director Michael Bay's robot action franchise, with a fifth instalment due next year.

I wouldn't hire James Bond, says real British spy chief

Despite his unrivalled record for single-handedly saving the world from disaster while seducing beautiful women along the way, James Bond would not get a job as a British spy, the head of external intelligence agency MI6 has said.

Alex Younger said real spies had to cope with complex moral and physical challenges in the most forbidding environments on Earth, which would rule out the agent known as 007 because he lacked a strong ethical core.

"In contrast to James Bond, MI6 officers are not for taking moral shortcuts," Younger said in an interview published on Black History Month, a website dedicated to Britain's annual celebration of its black culture and heritage.

"It's safe to say that James Bond wouldn't get through our recruitment process," said Younger.

He added that while real MI6 spooks shared Bond's qualities of patriotism, energy, and tenacity, they needed additional values not displayed by the hero of "From Russia with Love", "Goldfinger", "Dr. No" or more recently "Skyfall" or "Spectre".

"An intelligence officer in the real MI6 has a high degree of emotional intelligence, values teamwork and always has respect for the law -- unlike Mr Bond."

Donald Trump's Hollywood star vandalized

LOS ANGELES: A man defaced US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Wednesday, hacking out the gold lettering displaying his name and the television logo.

A man who identified himself to a local news agency as James Lambert Otis, said he vandalized the tribute with a sledgehammer and pickaxe, originally intended to remove the entire star from the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard.

He said was going to auction it and donate the proceeds to the women who allege they were groped or sexually mistreated by Trump – charges the real estate tycoon denies – but was unable to lift the paving slab.

"It was very difficult. The stone was like marble – hard to get through," he said about an hour after the 5:45 am attack on the star.

Dressed in construction overalls, Otis said he used the hammer and pick to hack away Trump´s name and the logo indicating the star had been awarded in the category of television -- for Trump´s work on his reality show, "The Apprentice."

Otis said he still hoped he can sell the pilfered pieces and return to do the star further damage.

"I´m not frightened of jail and I´m certainly not frightened of Mr Trump," said the man, who claims to have been arrested around two dozen times for protesting various causes.

This is not the first time that Trump´s Walk of Fame star, which he got in 2007, has been targeted.

In July, a Los Angeles-based street artist built a six-inch wall around the Republican presidential hopeful´s star, made of wooden planks and topped with barbed wire.

Trump has repeatedly vowed during his campaign to build a wall between Mexico and the United States, drawing criticism from rights groups.

Last year, excrement was left on the star and someone drew a large yellow X over it.

A swastika and a mute symbol were also drawn on the red tile earlier this year.

The Los Angeles police department said on Twitter they were investigating Wednesday's incident.

Hugh Laurie gets star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

British actor Hugh Laurie, best known for playing a cantankerous doctor in the TV series 'House', received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Tuesday.

Laurie, 57, was already well-known in Britain in the late 1980s for his role in the comedy series 'Blackadder', and 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' with his friend and former comedy partner Stephen Fry.

He crossed the Atlantic in 2004 to play Gregory House in the eight-year Fox TV series, twice winning the Golden Globe award for best actor in a TV drama.

"I have lost count of the number of times, the number of young people I've met who are either studying or practising medicine because they saw 'House'," Laurie said at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

"There are physicians today saving lives, delivering babies and lancing boils because their imagination was ignited by stories and ideas and possibilities that they might not otherwise have considered," he said.

Laurie currently stars in Hulu's thriller TV series 'Chance', playing a forensic neuropsychiatrist.

Fry, who met Laurie while studying at the University of Cambridge in England, poked fun at his friend during the ceremony.

"It is the tradition in this marvelous town to reward stars by bringing them down to earth, so far down to earth that now Hugh will spend eternity having chewing gum and dog poo trodden into him and very likely worse," Fry told the crowd.

"The world was at its feet and now the world's feet are at him," he added.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame said on its website that Laurie received the 2,593rd star on the renowned Hollywood Boulevard.

Nicholas Cage's latest movie is about Pakistan

Nicholas Cage's latest movie is about Pakistan. In the comedy 'Army of One' he plays the role of an aimless American who after a conversation with God arrives in Pakistan to look for Osama bin Laden.

The rest is an entertaining journey where he learns to fend for himself.

The movie is actually shot in Morroco, which has been shown as Pakistan. Keeping up with American stereotypes of what Pakistan looks like Nicholas rides a donkey, and a taxi with a very Arab looking driver.

We would have been psyched if Nicholas had actually come to Pakistan.

The movies is set to release on November 4. Here is its trailer.

Six face trial in France over photos of British royal Kate

PARIS: Six people including photographers and senior media industry officials are to face trial in France under privacy laws over the publication of photographs of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge topless in 2012, according to French media reports.

The reports, citing French national news agency Agence France Presse and a judicial source, said those covered by the case would include senior staff at French regional newspaper La Provence, Closer Magazine, and Closer's parent company - Silvio Berlusconi's Arnoldo Mondadori Editore publishing group.

Neither La Provence nor Mondadori could immediately be reached for comment.

The Duchess, Kate Middleton, and her husband Prince William pressed at the time for criminal charges in France to try to prevent wider publication of the pictures, which were taken of them on a balcony of a private residence while they were on holiday in the southern Luberon region.

According to Le Parisien newspaper the trial is likely to start next year.

Pop singer Timberlake will not be investigated for ballot selfie

Hours after Tennessee authorities said on Tuesday they were investigating pop star Justin Timberlake for posting a photo of himself in a polling station on social media, the local district attorney said no such probe was under way.

"The statement released earlier today by my office regarding Justin Timberlake and an investigation was incorrect and was released without my knowledge," Shelby County District Attorney General Amy Weirich said.

"I am out of town at a conference. No one in our office is currently investigating this matter nor will we be using our limited resources to do so," she said.

A representative for Timberlake did not respond to requests for comment.

The singer and actor appeared to have run afoul of Tennessee election law when he posted the photo, the latest controversy over so-called ballot selfies.

Timberlake, 35, posted the photo on Monday and said in the caption he had traveled from Los Angeles to his hometown of Memphis to take part in early voting ahead of the Nov. 8 election.

"Get out and VOTE! #exerciseyourrighttovote," Timberlake said in part of the photo´s caption, which was posted on Instagram, a social media site where he has over 37 million followers.

Tennessee law prohibits voters from recording or taking photographs or videos inside a polling station. The Shelby County district attorney´s office had said on Tuesday it was aware of a possible violation of state election law and was reviewing the matter, before clarifying that the original statement was incorrect.

A person convicted of the violation can be sentenced to up to 30 days in jail and fined $50, the office said previously. The proliferation of cellphone cameras and social media has created conflicts in states that have laws against taking photos inside polling booths and sharing photos of marked ballots.

The laws, which in some cases predate the social media age, are intended to prevent voter intimidation and any slowing of the voting process. On Monday, a federal court sided with a Michigan man who said the law there banning voters from taking pictures of their marked ballots and sharing them on social media violated his constitutional right to free speech. The court halted enforcement of the law.

In Colorado, two voters filed a federal lawsuit on Monday seeking to overturn a state law there that criminalized the showing of a completed ballot to others, arguing that the ban was unconstitutional.

LOS ANGELES: It was a battle of the sequels at the multiplexes this weekend, as "Boo! A Madea Halloween" narrowly edged out "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" to claim first place at the domestic box office.

The latest film in the long-running Madea series racked up $27.6 million. Comedian Chris Rock may be entitled to a percentage of the gross. Creator Tyler Perry was inspired to take his pistol-packing grandma trick-or-treating after Rock's comedian character in 2014's "Top Five" joked that his latest movie, a passion project about a slave revolt, was going head-to-head at the box office with "Boo! A Madea Halloween." What was once intended as satire eventually became a seasonally appropriate reality.

"This isn't the end of the series, it's just the beginning," said Jeff Bock, box office analyst with Exhibitor Relations, who noted that Perry also scored with 2013's "A Madea Christmas." "There are so many holidays left. There's Easter, St. Patrick's Day, and he hasn't even done a Thanksgiving one yet."

Don't look for "Boo!" to end up in the Oscar race or on many reviewers' "ten best" lists, but the Halloween comedy is a hit for distributor Lionsgate and reaffirms Perry's star power. Despite being routinely derided by critics, the film series has an extremely loyal fan base. Collectively they've earned nearly $380 million, enjoying capacious profit margins given that most of the movies cost less than a Papa John's Super Bowl spot to produce. The latest Madea cost $20 million to make, and attracted a more diverse crowd. Typically the films have an audience that's between 80% and 90% African-American, but this installment's crowd was only 60% African-American, with the rest of ticket buyers made up largely of Caucasians and Hispanic movie-goers.

"The film crossed over and it expanded the audience," said David Spitz, co-president of domestic distribution at Lionsgate. "Madea is such a beloved character and the timing helped. There are not many comedies in the marketplace right now and Halloween is right around the corner."

"Never Go Back" was right behind, with the action sequel earning a solid $23 million. The film brought back Tom Cruise as Reacher, an ex-military investigator with a penchant for ass-kicking. The films are based on a popular series of books by Lee Childs, but despite their best-selling pedigree, a sequel to "Jack Reacher" wasn't exactly a given. The first film ended up making money for Paramount in 2012, grossing $218.3 million worldwide on a production budget of $60 million, but it wasn't exactly a blockbuster. The film did, however, have a healthy after-life on home entertainment platforms.

"It felt for awhile like every time I'd go on a plane, it was the movie every person was watching," said Megan Colligan, Paramount's president of worldwide distribution and marketing. "It was a movie that expanded its audience."

The studio made sure that costs didn't escalate on the sequel, keeping the budget locked at $60 million, a feat since most franchises increase their spending with each subsequent installment. They were rewarded for the cost consciousness. "Never Go Back" improved on "Jack Reacher's" $15.2 million debut from four years ago. It's worth noting, however, that the previous film debuted days after the Sandy Hook elementary school killings, which may have depressed turnout for the violent adventure film. Overseas, "Never Go Back" performed well, earning $31 million.

"Ouija: Origin of Evil," the follow-up to 2014's low-budget horror hit "Ouija," picked up $14.1 million, a respectable return given its $9 million budget. Universal distributed the Blumhouse production, which got markedly better reviews than the original, but couldn't translate the critical notices into a bigger opening than its predecessor. The first film in the series kicked off to $19.9 million before going on to make $103.6 million globally. Platinum Dunes and Hasbro produced the board game adaptation.

"Origin of Evil" is set in the 1960s and centers on a scam seance artist who unwittingly invites evil spirits into her home. The film's PG-13 rating meant its audience skewed younger, with 57% of ticket-buyers clocking in under the age of 25. Universal believes the film will benefit from the holiday next week.

"Based on the fact that we're the only wide release horror film on Halloween, we're expecting to hold well," said Nick Carpou, Universal's domestic distribution chief.

Last weekend's champ, Warner Bros.' "The Accountant," came in fourth, holding well to pick up $14 million. That pushes the Ben Affleck thriller's domestic total to $47.9 million.

DreamWorks Pictures' "The Girl on the Train" rounded out the top five, earning $7.3 million. The adaptation of the literary hit about an alcoholic who becomes obsessed with a missing woman has earned $58.9 million after three weeks in theaters. Universal distributed the film.

The weekend's other major new release, Fox's "Keeping Up with the Joneses," flopped, eking out $5.6 million. The action-comedy about a suburban couple who gets entangled in the world of international espionage stars Jon Hamm, Zach Galifianakis, Gal Gadot, and Isla Fisher. It's a rough start given its $40 million budget.

Among other releases, "The Met: Live in HD's" screening of Mozart's Don Giovanni drew opera fans, grossing $1.7 million on more than 900 screens.

Faith-based distributor Pure Flix debuted "I'm Not Ashamed," a drama about a victim of the Columbine High School shootings, to $900,000 on 505 theaters.

Michael Moore waded into the presidential election with "Michael Moore in TrumpLand," a film of a one-man stage performance that the documentary filmmaker delivered in Ohio, all but begging the Rust Belt to abandon the Donald. The film earned $50,200 on two screens for a $25,100 per-screen average.

In a statement, Moore said, "This film speaks to and is being enjoyed by many constituencies, namely the 50% of the country planning not to vote, or those voting third party, but also among Clinton supporters and even Trump voters who know better. I'm convinced now that as millions of Americans will see this movie, it will have an impact on this election."

Rapturous critical notices lifted "Moonlight" at the art house box office this weekend. The film was bolstered by a love letter from the New York Times' A.O. Scott, who labeled it "breathtaking" and stopped short of declaring it 2016's best film with two months left to go in the year. The A24 release earned an impressive $414,740 on four screens, for a sizzling $103,685 per-screen average. That sets it up nicely as the indie distributor looks to expand the drama about a gay boy coming-of-age in the inner city of Miami. It could also bolster "Moonlight's" Oscar chances.

It's been a rough fall movie season, with ticket sales down more than 12%, but things appear to be on the upswing. Revenues were up 18% from the year-ago period, when "The Last Witch Hunter" and "Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension" both bombed. Analysts believe the box office is poised for a rebound, with several big-budget offerings hitting theaters in the coming weeks, such as "Inferno" with Tom Hanks and Marvel's "Doctor Strange."

"This should be the start of a turnaround," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst with ComScore. "After hitting rock bottom, now we begin climbing back."

Mahira Khan to shoot final scenes for Raees at secret location

Mahira Khan is gearing up to shoot final scenes for her Bollywood debut Raees with co-star Shahrukh Khan at a secret location.

Speculations in the Indian media over the location for the shoot is Abu Dhabi since getting Mahira to India amid rising threats from MNS has been ruled out.

Despite confirmation by the production guild that they will not cast anymore Pakistani actors, filmmaker for Raees claims that only a few final scenes are left and replacing Mahira at this point will mean huge losses. The film is expected to release in January and its team is hoping that tensions between the two countries will simmer down by then.

Karan Johar filmmaker for Pakistani actor Fawad Khan starrer Ae Dil Hai Mushkil gave into extremist MNS threatening the release of his movie. After a meeting with its chief Raj Thackeray he vowed not to cast any Pakistani actors in the future and donate Rs 50 million to the army welfare fund.

UN appoints Wonder Woman as honorary ambassador amid criticism

UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations has named comic-book superhero Wonder Woman as an honorary ambassador to fight for gender equality, amid criticism that the scantily clad fictional character was an inappropriate choice.

UN officials at a ceremony formalizing the appointment said Wonder Woman is known for her commitment to justice, peace and equality.

"Wonder Woman is an icon," said UN Under-Secretary-General Cristina Gallach. "We are very pleased that this character will help us reach new audiences with essential messages of our empowerment and equality."

UN officials have said they hoped the selection of a comic-book hero and movie character would appeal to younger women in its campaign for women's empowerment, and the slogan of the campaign says: "Think of all the wonders we can do."

Wonder Woman, a DC Comics Inc. heroine, first appeared in 1942, fighting villains, rescuing victims and unearthing diabolical plots.

On hand was actress Lynda Carter, who played Wonder Woman in a television series in the 1970s, and actress Gal Gadot, who will play Wonder Woman in a movie to be released next year.

"I couldn't think of a more perfect role for her," said Carter, saying the character shows women can be "smart and beautiful and strong and wise and kind and brave."

But the selection has been met with opposition, and nearly 1,000 people signed an online petition asking UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to reconsider the choice.

Several dozen UN employees, one holding a sign saying "Women deserve a real ambassador," staged a silent protest in the UN's visitor's lobby as the ceremony was held.

"Why do we need to use a sexualized cartoon character?" said employee Elizabeth Leff.

In addition to a political statement regarding the state and society, the works according, to Faruqi, also make a reference to old craftsmanship.

On the other hand, the display of dirty porcelain tea-sets and painted bricks by Sadia Salim depicts politics of the ordinary and elevated. A visual artist and an educator, Salim says her intervention with the objects also contemplates the hierarchies in arts and crafts.

The show will continue till November 4.

Tom Cruise brings action-packed 'Jack Reacher' sequel to London

LONDON: Crowds of screaming fans braced the cold and packed into London's Leicester Square on Thursday to catch a glimpse of Tom Cruise as he premiered his film "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back", which he described as a "classic action" film filled with suspense.

The film sees Cruise reprise his role in the sequel to the 2012 film "Jack Reacher" playing a former US military officer turned fugitive, on a mission to uncover a conspiracy that has accused his colleague, Major Susan Turner, of espionage.

Turner is played by Cobie Smulders - the "How I Met Your Mother" actress - who was also at the European premiere.

"He's just got such a unique wit," Cruise said about Reacher, a character based on books written by British author Lee Child, who also makes a cameo appearance in the film.

Cruise said he was busy working on his sixth Mission Impossible film and also hinted that he was in talks about taking up his popular role as daring pilot "Maverick" in a Top Gun sequel, although he stopped short of making promises to fans.

"We've been talking about it, it's just the right script ... it's got to be right," he told Reuters.

"Jack Reacher: Never Go Back", was directed by Edward Zwick who worked with Cruise on the 2003 film "The Last Samurai" and said that the two had developed a trust and simply "took up where we left off."

Pakistan's newest celebrity, a handsome tea vendor, rejects film talk

ISLAMABAD: An 18-year-old tea vendor who became Pakistan's hottest new celebrity when his photo went viral on the Internet says he has no plans for an acting career - though he is flattered by the attention.

Arshad Khan became an overnight sensation this week when a photographer's Instagram shot of him working at his tea stall was shared tens of thousands of times.

"It was all very baffling," said Khan, who has blue-green eyes, a wiry physique and a trim moustache.

Khan is an ethnic Pashtun, a people living mostly in Pakistan and Afghanistan who sometimes have light skin and eyes, a testament to the region's history as a cultural crossroads of trade, conquering armies and colonialism.

Local news outlets have reported offers of modeling contracts and even a possible film career for Khan, but he says he's not interested.

"I have not thought about (acting in) movies, because it's not been done by anyone in our family," he said.

Acting in films, he said "is not honorable work. Pashtuns always look for work that is honorable .... If I can find some clean, honorable work, I will certainly do it."

Even if he did have acting aspirations, his opportunities may be limited by the escalating tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors Pakistan and India.

There have already been calls in India for a ban on Pakistani actors and actresses in the country's giant Bollywood film industry.

Despite his lack of interest in acting, Khan said he has come to enjoy his sudden - albeit possibly brief - moment of fame.

"I came to know this morning that I am very good looking," he said. "All these people are coming and taking pictures and videos of me."

Johnny Cash's "Hurt" plays over the trailer in which we see military forces track down Logan and the young girl.

Logan is slated to be Jackman's last film as Wolverine, so comic fans are speculating that the young girl is none other than Laura Kinney a.k.a. X-23, Wolverine's successor in the current comics.

Logan is the ninth edition of the X-men movie series where Jackman has played the role of Wolverine.

Logan hits theatres March 3, 2017.

After Pakistani artists, Indian media targets Pierce Brosnan

After Pakistan artists, former James Bond Pierce Brosnan is now in Indian media's crosshairs over a controversial pan masala mouth freshener advertisement.

According to latest reports, Indian Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chief has refused to give green signal to the advertisement starring the Hollywood actor.

Brosnan's endorsement of a pan masala was deeply criticised as the product is most likely to be carcinogenic.

The Consumer Protection Act in the Indian Constitution deems tobacco and alcohol advertisements illegal in the country.

Not only that, the pan masala also is responsible for bright red stains on public places that people leave after chewing and spitting it.

Brosnan reacted to the flak he received due to his endorsement, saying he was deeply hurt and would never knowingly advertise something harmful.

He was also reported to have said that the company unauthorisedly used his images for the entire range of pan masala products even though he agreed to advertise only one product.

Brosnan demanded removal of his images from the products' range saying he had no idea about the danger those products pose to public health.

Earlier, some Indian cinemas refused to screen films featuring Pakistani actors as the ties between two neighbouring countries turned sour after the Uri attack and India's alleged 'surgical strikes'.
