The state of fashion: Top trends of 2017

Each year brings new trends, some stay for a while, some are just a fad. We take a good look at all that looked good this year and some looks we hope to never see again. Here are some of the top fashion trends of 2017:

1. Ugly shoes

We saw a lot of changes in the fashion industry but what came back with a bang was the "ugly shoe or dad shoes," trend. Demi Gvasalia's idea skyrocketed for Balanciaga and it faced uncountable sales and all the fast fashion brands wanted to copy.

2. Tribute to Gianni Versace

A/w 2018 Milan fashion week

This year Donetella Versace revamped the 90s look made by Versace, the whole collection was exactly the same and in the end of the show the 90s' most iconic models Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Helena Christensen were the show stoppers. These models were "the golden girls" for Gianni and their comeback on the ramp proved their power again.

3. Ban on ultra-thin and underage models

Luxury Fashion Giants LVMH and Kering, which owns brands like Gucci, LV, YSL, Kenzo etc, banned ultra thin and underage models in response to criticism of how young women are portrayed and treated in the fashion world.

They also banned the use of French measurement size 32 for women (equals to a UK size 4 or US size 0.)

4. The power of social media

One small Instagram account called out copy cats in fashion and now it's one of the most followed Instagram accounts, "Diet Prada". This Instagram handle pointed out brands like Gucci, Dolce and Gabanna and many more.

One recent call-out was of social media star, Kim Kardashian for copying her collection from the gifts she received from well known brands like Comme des Garcon.

5. The world is pink

The most famous colour in 2017 remained millennial pink. Colours always come in and out of fashion, but this pink is different. Even now, just when it seemed like we had hit a peak and it was finally on the wane, there it appeared again, everywhere in lookbooks and the ramp, and donned by celebrities all over Instagram. Millenial pink refuses to go out of fashion.

6. Micheal Kors buys world famous Jimmy Choo

Jimmy Choo is a luxury shoe company and who doesn't dream of owning one of their shoes? It will be strange to see how a brand like Michael Kors will take it further.
