Netflix has ordered a new animated adult comedy from "The Simpsons" mastermind Matt Groening, the streaming service announced Tuesday.
"Disenchantment" will take viewers to the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, where they follow the misadventures of hard-drinking princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo and her personal demon Luci.
Along the way, the trio encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
"Ultimately, 'Disenchantment' will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you," Groening said in a statement issued by Netflix.
The voices will be provided by Abbi Jacobson ("The Lego Ninjago Movie"), Nat Faxon and Eric Andre ("Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping"), with animation from Rough Draft, the studio behind Fox's "Futurama," also created by Groening.
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes, the first half of which will premiere next year.
Groening's "The Simpsons," also on Fox, is the longest-running comedy in US television history, beginning its 29th season in the fall.
"Matt Groening's brilliant work has resonated with generations around the world and we couldn't be happier to work with him on 'Disenchantment,'" said Cindy Holland, vice president in charge of original content for Netflix.
"The series will bear his trademark animation style and biting wit, and we think it's a perfect fit for our many Netflix animation fans."
Netflix describes itself as the world's leading internet television network, with 104 million members in more than 190 countries.
