Rap mogul Russell Simmons steps down after sex accusations

NEW YORK: Russell Simmons — who helped bring hip-hop into the mainstream with Def Jam Recordings — said Thursday he was quitting his business empire after fresh allegations of sexual abuse.

The 60-year-old — who unlike many in the rap world had until recently an uncontroversial public image — disputed the latest claim against him but said he viewed the mounting public spotlight on sexual misconduct to be "a time of great transition".

"The voices of the voiceless, those who have been hurt or shamed, deserve and need to be heard," Simmons said in a statement.

"As the corridors of power inevitably make way for a new generation, I don't want to be a distraction so I am removing myself from the businesses that I founded," he said.

The announcement came after Rachel Getting Married screenwriter Jenny Lumet said that Simmons assaulted her in 1991 when she was 24 and he was a decade older.

Writing in The Hollywood Reporter, Lumet said Simmons forced her into his New York apartment, with his driver refusing her pleas to be taken to her own home, and had sex with her even though she said no.

In his statement, Simmons said he remembered the evening differently but acknowledged that "her feelings of fear and intimidation are real".

"While I have never been violent, I have been thoughtless and insensitive in some of my relationships over many decades and I sincerely and humbly apologize," he said.

Simmons earlier denied accusations by model Keri Claussen Khalighi that he assaulted her in 1991 when she was 17.

Simmons and fellow producer Rick Rubin founded Def Jam in the mid-1980s as hip-hop became a growing force, signing acts such as the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, and later, Public Enemy, who brought rap to a wide US audience for the first time.

Simmons also promoted Run-D.M.C., the trailblazing rap trio that included his brother Joseph.

While stepping back from music production, Simmons has remained active in entertainment promotion with his Rush Communications firm.

He also runs a fashion brand and a company of yoga apparel and studios.

A yoga enthusiast himself, Simmons said that a "new and diverse generation" of executives would take over his companies and that he would turn a yoga studio into a "not-for-profit center of learning and healing".

He has also been active in charities, notably supporting animal rights and advocating veganism.

Disney makes history as 'Thor' pushes takings to $5 billion

LOS ANGELES: The thunderous success of Thor: Ragnarok has helped Walt Disney Studios become the first distributor in history to hit $5 billion in annual global box office sales three times, it said Thursday.

The superhero movie — made by Disney's Marvel subsidiary — is on the verge of surpassing $800 million worldwide, putting the company's haul for 2017 at $1.8 billion in North America and $3.2 billion abroad.

It is the third year in a row that the entertainment giant has passed the $5-billion benchmark, with Star Wars: The Last Jedi — its sure-fire biggest hit — not due in theatres for another two weeks.

Last year was the first in which all five of Walt Disney Studios' top brands — Disney, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel Studios, and Lucasfilm — released movies, giving the company an industry-first $7 billion box office.

Much of Disney's success this year has been due to its live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast — the highest grossing film worldwide in 2017 with $1.3 billion.

It has been a record year for Marvel, which is celebrating its first hat-trick of $100 million-plus domestic openings — kicked off in May by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and followed a month later by Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Those two films also passed $800 million worldwide, making the trifecta (including Thor) a first for Marvel, with the parent company expected to account for half of the top 10 highest grossing films of 2017.

Pixar's Coco netted $72.9 million for the five-day Thanksgiving period and is approaching $180 million worldwide, while late 2016 releases Moana and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story bumped up 2017 takings by $561 million.

The Last Jedi — which hits theatres on December 15 — is widely expected to have the top domestic opening weekend of the year and cross the $1 billion mark.

The Walt Disney Company — the world's second-largest media conglomerate behind Comcast — surprised investors earlier this month by missing Wall Street expectations for fourth-quarter revenue and earnings.

But the company is expecting to bounce back as it expands its Star Wars franchise with a new trilogy and live-action TV series and introduces streaming services to rival Netflix and Amazon.

Matt Lauer apologizes after 'Today' firing as more women come forward

NEW YORK: Longtime Today show host Matt Lauer apologized for what he called his "troubling flaws" in a statement read out on the NBC morning show on Thursday, a day after the network fired him for inappropriate sexual behaviour.

As his 20 years as a fixture of US morning television came to an abrupt end, Lauer found himself among the growing ranks of powerful men in US entertainment, politics, and media to be felled in recent months by accusations of sexual misconduct.

59-year-old Lauer — who got married for the second time in 1998 — said in his statement that some of the accusations against him were "untrue or mischaracterized", without explaining further, but said that "there is enough truth in these stories to make me feel embarrassed and ashamed."

He was fired after a female colleague complained to NBC officials on Monday evening about a pattern of inappropriate sexual behaviour that began while they were on assignment at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia, according to NBC statements.

Since then, at least two more women have gone to NBC with similar complaints against Lauer, the Today show reported on Thursday. None of the women has been publicly identified.

"Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort," Lauer said in the statement, which was read by his former co-host Savannah Guthrie at the start of Thursday's broadcast.

"It is now my full-time job," the statement said. "The last two days have forced me to take a very hard look at my own troubling flaws."

Lauer said he was "truly sorry" for the pain he had caused.

Reuters has not independently verified the accusations.

NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack said the network had never received a complaint about Lauer's conduct prior to Monday but that "we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident".

Jeff Zucker — a former Today show producer who rose up the ranks to become president of NBCUniversal — said he had never heard any complaints against Lauer during his time at the network, where he spent 25 years before joining CNN as president in 2013.

"There was never a suggestion of that kind of deviant, predatory behaviour, not even a whisper of it," Zucker said during the Business Insider IGNITION 2017 conference in New York on Thursday.

He called the allegations against Lauer "incredibly disturbing" and sad.

Lauer was promoted to a host of the Today show in 1997 and went on to become one of NBC's highest-paid personalities — reportedly being paid $20 million a year.

The Comcast-owned network did not respond to questions about its plans for replacing Lauer.

Media analysts say his sudden departure could send some viewers to morning-news rivals, at least in the short term.

Today dominated the morning rating wars for much of Lauer's tenure but it was overtaken in 2012 by Good Morning America on Walt Disney Co's ABC network.

Don't know about others but Sanjay Bhansali has definitely offended me: Salman

Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to have offended quite a few people, and Salman is the latest addition to the list.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to have offended quite a few people, and Salman is the latest 'addition' to the list.

The megastar has 'accused' the ace-director of 'offending' him, India Time reported.

"Don't know about others but Sanjay Leela Bhansali has definitely offended me," Salman said, taking a friendly jibe at the director.

"I gave him two hits but he still chose Shah Rukh Khan for Devdas," he said, on a lighter note.

Expressing his views on Bhansali's upcoming movie Padmavati and the controversies it is surrounded with, Salman said: "Nobody but only the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the court will decide on Padmavati."

"Yes, it is not right to hurt anyone's sentiments but at the same time, it is not fair to comment on the film without seeing it. Everyone must respect the verdict of the censor board."

Padmavati controversy is at its peak.

Even a day before its initial release date there is no sign of calm. A few celebrities have come out in the open to lend their support to Bhansali's film.

Salman, who has earlier worked with the filmmaker in Khamoshi (1996) and Hum Dil Chuke Sanam (1999), has also said that Bhansali is a responsible filmmaker and will not make a film that will offend anyone.

Speaking at the Hindustan Times Summit, the actor further pointed out how the controversies and negativity around a film are detrimental to the entire industry and works against all those people who work in it.

"Whenever there is a controversy around a film, there is a lot of loss. People panic, and refrain from going to theatres," said Salman.

The actor urged all the groups involved in the Padmavati controversy to stop protesting without watching the film first.

Is there a rift between Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar?

Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar - File photo

Once considered good friends, it seems these days there is a rift between Bollywood superstars Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar.

At a recent event, the two did not even acknowledge each other and acted like the other did not even exist.

The two shared the stage with Amitabh Bachchan at IFFI 2017 and did their best to avoid each other.

Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Karan Johan were set to produce a movie together but the Dabanng star backed out for unknown reasons. There are also reports that Akshay hired Salman's former manager who he had had a falling out with.

SNL's Kumail Nanjiani and Wonder Woman Gal get candid about personal lives

Kumail Nanjiani and Gal Gadot interview each other on 'Actors on Actors'

The Wonder Woman wowing the box office — Gal Gadot and Saturday Night Live's most recent host, Pakistani-American actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani interviewed each other on the show 'Actor on Actor', getting candid about their personal lives and struggles.

They also shared the experiences of their recent projects. Here's how their conversation went:

Nanjiani: So how did you end up playing Wonder Woman? How did that happen?

Gadot: It's kind of one thing led to the other. I never planned on becoming an actor, and then I had this opportunity where this casting director flew to Israel; she was looking for a new Bond girl. I did the audition, didn't get the part, but through this experience, I was like, "This is so much more interesting than going to law school."

Nanjiani: You were in law school?

Gadot: Yeah, I know. Thank goodness life interrupts and comes in the way. It was weird because I didn't know they were auditioning me for Wonder Woman. I knew I was auditioning for this secret project.

PHOTO: VARIETY

Gadot: I read that you didn't want to be an actor either. What are you doing here?

Nanjiani: I don't know what happened. Huge mistake. My parents wanted me to be a doctor.

Gadot: They wanted me to be a lawyer. We have so much in common.

Nanjiani: We're both immigrants. We play immigrants in our movies.

Gadot: We both get asked all the time, "How do I pronounce your name?"

Nanjiani: So I decided pretty early on the fact that I didn't want to be a doctor because the stakes are so high. Like if we mess up, we get another take. With a doctor, the worst-case scenario is much worse, right? And I sort of fell in love with comedy. From the stand-up, it went into writing and then into acting. The first thing I acted in that I wrote for was a show called Michael and Michael Have Issues. I was like, 'Oh, my God, this is going to be my life. This is going to be great' — it lasted six episodes. Really, I've been in the right place at the right time over and over.

PHOTO: VARIETY

Gadot: I get really emotional and excited when it's little kids. To them, I'm not Gal. To them, I'm Diana. I'm Wonder Woman. It's funny how this movie was so broad, touched different people, different ages, different cultures. I got photos from people that I work with or friends that their grandparents went to see it with their wheelchair and everything. It's been really overwhelming. Right now, in the eye of the storm, I enjoy it and I appreciate the amazing feedback. But I think that it's going to take me time to really digest and realize what's happening.

Michael Jackson's impact on art revealed in new show

Pop legend Michael Jackson's "huge impact" on contemporary art will be explored in a new exhibition in Paris and London next year.

The "groundbreaking" show claims it will tell the "untold story" of how the king of pop became "one of the most influential figures in art of the last half century", inspiring artists from Andy Warhol to David LaChapelle and Grayson Perry.

Works featuring Jackson by some 40 artists including Gary Hume, Maggi Hambling, Catherine Opie and Yan Pei Ming will be brought together for the first time in "Michael Jackson: On the Wall" at the National Portrait Gallery in London in June, before the show travels to the Grand Palais in Paris in November.

Jackson is credited with helping turn the music video into an art form, and of popularising the robot and moonwalk dance moves.

Curator Dr Nicholas Cullinan, who runs the London gallery, said the show takes "an entirely new and quite radical approach by exploring the cultural impact of a unique figure through contemporary art."

Jackson was trying to revive his waning controversy-dogged career when he died aged 50 in 2009 from an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol on the eve of a comeback tour.

By then he had sold more than 184 million records and CDs, with his 1982 album "Thriller" still the biggest seller of all time.

Cullinan said the exhibition "breaks new ground in its subject matter" and in the range and origin of the artists involved, all fascinated by "what Jackson represented and what he invented".

"It is rare that there is something new to say about someone so famous, but here that is the case," Cullinan added.

Selena Gomez most-followed on Instagram, Ronaldo climbs

LOS ANGELES: Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo muscled his way into Instagram's top-followed ranks this year as he documented his career and growing family, but pop star Selena Gomez still reigned supreme on the social media platform.

Ronaldo, who was named Forbes' highest-paid soccer player this year with $93 million in earnings, climbed to No. 2 with 116 million followers on Instagram, up from 82.8 million followers and the No. 6 slot last year.

Gomez remained the most-followed person on Instagram with 130 million followers this year, up from 103 million last year.

Ronaldo, 32, a striker for Real Madrid, has posted numerous photos and videos on Instagram this year both on and off the soccer field. He notched three of the ten most-liked posts on Instagram this year, all documenting his growing family.

The athlete announced that he was a father to newborn twins born to a surrogate mother in June, in a post that garnered more than 8.2 million likes. His most popular post clocked more than 11 million likes in November, announcing the birth of his baby daughter with his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

In 2010, Ronaldo said he became father to a son and had full custody. The mother's identity was not publicly announced.

Facebook Inc-owned Instagram has more than 500 million daily active users and 800 million monthly active users. The platform allows users to post photos, videos and this year introduced instant 'stories,' where posted videos and photos disappear after 24 hours.

Singers Ariana Grande and Beyonce held onto the third and fourth most-followed spots with 115 million followers and 108 million followers respectively this year, while reality star Kim Kardashian West held onto the fifth spot with 104 million fans.

Beyonce's February photo announcing her pregnancy with twins was the most-liked photo on Instagram this year, with more than 11.1 million likes.

Taylor Swift dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 after the 27-year-old disappeared from social media earlier this year after a highly publicized breakup with British DJ Calvin Harris and feuds with Katy Perry, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

She returned to Instagram in August with a scrubbed Instagram profile and promoted her new music on her feed.

Among the data compiled by Instagram between Jan. 1 and Nov. 17, the most popular hashtag used was #love, the city most featured in posts was New York and the most-Instagrammed location was Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

US radio host Garrison Keillor fired over claim of improper behaviour

LOS ANGELES: Veteran US radio host Garrison Keillor, creator of the folksy show "A Prairie Home Companion," has been fired over an accusation of inappropriate behaviour, Minnesota Public Radio said on Wednesday.

"Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) is terminating its contracts with Garrison Keillor and his private media companies after recently learning of allegations of his inappropriate behaviour with an individual who worked with him," the organisation said in a statement. It gave no details.

David O'Neill, a representative of Keillor did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Associated Press reported that Keillor said in an email he was fired over "a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version MPR heard," but he gave no details.

Reuters was not able to independently confirm the allegations.

Keillor, 75, an author and humourist, is best known as the creator of "A Prairie Home Companion," which he hosted from 1974 to 2016.

MPR said it would end rebroadcasts of "The Best of A Prairie Home Companion," hosted by Keillor, as well as distribution and broadcast of his show "The Writer's Almanac."

It said the allegation relates to Keillor's time as a producer of "A Prairie Home Companion." MPR was notified last month and retained an outside law firm to conduct an independent investigation.

"While we appreciate the contributions Garrison has made to MPR and to all of public radio, we believe this decision is the right thing to do and is necessary to continue to earn the trust of our audiences, employees and supporters of our public service," Jon McTaggart, president of MPR, said in the statement.

Avengers: Infinity War trailer marks beginning of the end

The much-awaited trailer of Avengers: Infinity War was finally released on Wednesday and it is everything you hoped for.

Directed by Russo brothers Infinity War, which marks the beginning of the end of the first arch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, features all of the Avengers we have encountered in the last 10 years.

The trailer begins outlining a plan for the Avengers— assembling Earth's mightiest heroes — and then showing how Thanos is going to tear them apart. The villain also possesses two Infinity Stones, one which he is seen taking from Vision (played by Paul Bettany).

"In time, you will know what it will be like to lose," Thanos (played by Josh Brolin) warns the Avengers and other shot shows him taking over the Earth and pummeling Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr).

The shots from Wakanda are also shown, where Black Panther (Chad Boswick) commands his forces to stop the invasion. The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Black Widow with blond hair (Scarlett Johansson) and Captain America (Chris Evans) are also present there which could be a reference to a post-credits scene from Civil War when Cap asked Blank Panther to take Bucky under his protection.

The ending of the trailer references an Easter egg spotted in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, showing that Asgard and the Guardians are in the same cosmic universe. An Odin-like Thor, who lost his eye during a battle with his sister Hela in Ragnorok, meets Guardians of the Galaxy.

The movie is expected to release in May 2018.

NBC sacks newsman Matt Lauer over alleged sexual misconduct

Matt Lauer, second from the left in a file photo with fellow NBC television personalities, has been fired as the network's star morning news anchor. — AFP

WASHINGTON: NBC said Wednesday it has fired Matt Lauer, a well-known morning news anchor, for what it described as inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace.

Lauer's co-host Savannah Guthrie announced his termination at the beginning of Wednesday's "Today" program.

"This is a sad morning here at 'Today' and at NBC News," Guthrie said.

Lauer, 59, is one of the best known faces on America's popular early morning news shows.

He thus joins the ranks of other titans of American entertainment, journalism and politics who have fallen amid allegations of sexual harassment, assault or rape in a groundswell of outrage that began with a flood of charges against movie mogul Harvey Weinstein.

In a memo to staff, NBC chairman Andrew Lack said that on Monday night the network received a detailed complaint about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Lauer.

"It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company's standards. As a result, we've decided to terminate his employment," Lack wrote.

Lack said this was the first complaint against Lauer in his more than 20 years with NBC but that the network was provided with evidence suggesting this may not have been an isolated incident.

Are Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra back together?

Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra are reportedly back together.

Everyone was taken by surprise after Nargis Fakhri and Uday Chopra decided to part ways.

People are even more surprised now after rumours are abuzz that the two are back together.

Their love story was a low-key affair while it lasted. The couple dated for two years before calling off their relationship.

Nargis reportedly left the country after the breakup to heal herself in New York. Uday too seemed to be pining for her, as apparent from his messages on social media.

If a report on Spotboye is anything to go by, Uday and Nargis were spotted spending some quality time in New York in May this year.

The same was denied by Nargis on her Twitter handle. When stories of the couple's marriage started floating around, Nargis rubbished that too.

Even if marriage is not on the cards for the couple, for now, reconciliation has happened for sure.

The Spotboye report says that Nargis is staying with Uday and his mother Pamela Chopra in their Juhu bungalow.

"Nargis often travels to the US but aajkal bahut aati jaati rehti hai [travels back and forth often these days] and you can say that she has a new address in Mumbai," a source was quoted as saying in the report.

Whether it is Uday who is making extra efforts to bring things back to normal or Nargis who had a change of heart, we are happy that the couple is back together.

Jealous fiancĂ©? Meghan Markle’s ‘Suits’ co-star jokes about his ‘dismay’ at royal engagement

Patrick J. Adams as Mike Ross and Meghan Markle as Rachel Zane on 'Suits'

As Twitter flooded with heartiest congratulations for the newly engaged royal couple, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, one of the best reactions came from the actress' fiancé on TV show 'Suits'.

Patrick J. Adams, who plays Markle's character Rachel Zane's longtime fiancé Mike Ross in the legal drama, sent out a shocked tweet after Kensington Palace announced that Markle will be joining England's royal family.

"She said she was just going out to get some milk..." he joked.

Adams followed up his tweet with a toast to the happy couple.

"Playing Meghan's television partner for the better part of a decade uniquely qualifies me to say this: Your Royal Highness, you are a lucky man and I know your long life together will be joyful, productive and hilarious," he wrote on Instagram and Twitter. "Meghan, so happy for you, friend. Much love."

Markle has wrapped up her role on 'Suits' after seven seasons, USA Network and Universal Cable Productions said in a statement, a day after the announcement of the royal engagement.

Happy birthday Fawad Khan! A look at the rise and rise of Pakistan’s favourite heartthrob

Can there be anyone more Khoobsurat than him? Whose every dialogue on screen and photoshoot has a Dastaan to tell, whose charm has become our Humsafar, and made us say Humari 'Zindagi Gulzar Hai'. No more subtle hints, you know who we are talking about!

The actor, singer, charmer, and surely Pakistan's best export to the world… it's none other than… the one and only..

Fawad Khan!

Ladies and Gentlemen, hold your breath.. our slayer of hearts, born with one purpose in life - to put magic in our aesthetic taste by the virtue of his mere presence, is celebrating his 36th birthday today.

Jin Se Mil Kar Zindagi Se Ishq Ho Jaye Wo Log

Aap Ne Shayad Na Dekhe Hon Magar Aise Bhi Hain

One can be good looking but to become a standard of good looks, complimented with a grace in personality, is a trait enjoyed by only a few – and Fawad Khan is undoubtedly among the latter.

The actor once aspired of becoming an aeronautical engineer but graduated with a degree in computers. And he was humble enough to acknowledge in his interviews that he "couldn't make money out of coding" because he "was a terrible computer engineer."

But, science's loss was our gain.

Fawad burst onto the local scene with his alternative rock band, Entity Paradigm, in the early 2000s. He became a household name in music after the release of the band's debut album, 'Irtiqa', in 2003; at the same time, Fawad's acting skills continued to make a jaw-dropping impression all over the country in the sit-com drama, Jutt and Bond.

The young and dashing singer then shot to fame with memorable performances in TV dramas Dastaan, Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hai, gaining wide acclaim by the audiences and critics alike.

NOT JUST A BEAUTIFUL FACE, IS IT?

His dialogue delivery and expressions made him stand out from his contemporaries and left an indelible mark on the hearts of millions of his fans.

Fawad was equally impressive on the big screen, playing a challenging role in Shoaib Mansoor's 'Khuda Kay Liye' where again, he emerged as the winner.

It came as no surprise then, when he became an overnight heartthrob across the border with lead roles in Khoobsurat, Kapoor and Sons and a cameo in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

By then, Bollywood had well and truly kneeled before King Fawad.

The actor has already won two Filmfare awards, Best Male Debut for Khoobsurat and Best Supporting Actor for Kapoor and Sons, and a countless other accolades for his performances.

On his 36th, Twitter is already overflowing with fans' love for Fawad Khan both sides of the border.

Happy hatchday Fawad! Keep rockin'!

Wear with care: Stella McCartney helps redesign climate-friendly fashion

British fashion designer Stella McCartney and world-record breaking sailor Ellen MacArthur launch a report on the importance of a climate-friendly textile industry. Photo courtesy of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

LONDON: The fashion industry urgently needs to reform its wasteful, polluting ways, British designer Stella McCartney and record-breaking sailor Ellen MacArthur said on Tuesday.

With global clothing sales doubling since 2000, people now wear each item far fewer times, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation said, calling for items ranging from T-shirts to jeans to be designed differently and reused more.

The charity — established in 2010 — has pioneered a shift toward a "circular economy", in which raw materials and products are repeatedly reused to reduce waste and pollution.

"Fashion is allowed to be fun," McCartney — the daughter of the Beatles' Paul McCartney — said, adding, "The reality is we just need to be a bit more mindful and curious about the way we're consuming and have a level of responsibility."

The fashion industry is worth about $2.4 trillion a year, according to the global consultancy McKinsey.

The equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is wasted every second, and less than 1 percent of clothing is recycled into new clothes, MacArthur's foundation said in a report.

"The trajectory for the textiles industry is catastrophic if it continues in this way," MacArthur told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"We need to radically change the way that clothing is designed, used, made and recovered so that we end up with a system that is restorative and regenerative," she said.

If nothing changes, the fashion industry will consume a quarter of the world's annual carbon budget by 2050, it said, referring to the emissions the world can make while keeping the global temperature rise at no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

Fashion must abandon its "take-make-dispose" model, where unwanted clothes are sent to landfill sites or incinerated, and start using non-polluting materials that are designed to last and could save the industry $500 billion, it said.

The report presents a roadmap for creating better businesses and more innovative solutions, said McCartney, a long-time vegetarian who does not use leather, PVC or fur in her clothing.

Textile production emits 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases annually, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined, the report said.

Clothes also release half a million tonnes of plastic microfibers into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles, it said.

Several major brands said they support the initiative, including Swedish fashion retailer H&M and sports giant Nike.

"(It) is aligned with our efforts in making sure that economic and social development can happen in a way that the planet can afford," H&M's chief executive Karl-Johan Persson said in a statement.

Steven Spielberg's 'The Post' aimed at people 'starving for the truth'

LOS ANGELES: Steven Spielberg's new movie The Post may be set in 1971 but its theme about press freedom is all about today.

Spielberg rushed to get the movie filmed and released within a year.

It is about the battle by newspapers to publish the leaked Pentagon Papers detailing the US government's misleading portrayal of the Vietnam War.

"I just felt that there was an urgency to reflect 1971 and 2017 because they were very terrifyingly similar," the Oscar-winning director told a Hollywood audience after a screening of the film on Monday.

"Our intended audience are the people who have spent the last 13, 14 months thirsting and starving for the truth," Spielberg said. "They are out there, and they need some good news."

Starring Meryl Streep as the late Washington Post publisher Katharine Graham and Tom Hanks as late editor Ben Bradlee, The Post was named on Monday the best film of 2017 by the National Board of Review — a New York-based 100-year-old group of academics, filmmakers, and professionals.

Streep was named best actress and Hanks was voted best actor, setting the film up as an early front-runner for the Oscars.

Spielberg — a prominent Hollywood Democrat — did not mention US President Donald Trump in his remarks.

But The Post arrives in movie theatres in December at a time when the media has been under repeated attacks by Trump since his election in November 2016.

Trump has called the press "the enemy of the American people." He uses the term "fake news" to cast doubt on news reports critical of his administration, often without providing evidence to support his case.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions said in August the Trump administration was considering requiring journalists to reveal their sources amid Trump's push to stop leaks to the press.

The film dramatizes the decisions by the New York Times and the Washington Post to publish the top-secret Pentagon Papers about the Vietnam War in the face of injunctions by the Nixon administration in a battle that went to the US Supreme Court.

Spielberg said that before making the film, he was "really depressed about what was happening in the world and the country".

After getting the script in February, "suddenly my entire outlook on the future brightened overnight", he said.

The Post was shot in June and opens in US movie theatres on December 22.

Prince Harry, Meghan to marry in Windsor Castle in May: palace

LONDON: Prince Harry and his American fiancee Meghan Markle will marry at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle in May next year, Kensington Palace said on Tuesday.

"Her Majesty The Queen has granted permission for the wedding to take place in the chapel. The Royal Family will pay for the wedding," the palace said in a statement.

On Monday, Clarence House had confirmed that Prince Harry will tie the knot with his American actress girlfriend Meghan Markle.

According to a Clarence House statement, the wedding will take place in Spring 2018 and further details about the wedding day would be announced in due course.

The statement further added that the couple were engaged in London earlier this month and Prince Harry has informed The Queen and other close members of his family. The prince also sought and received the blessing of Meghan Markle's parents.

The couple will reside in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.

However, Meghan Markle will not be called Princess Meghan after she ties the knot with Prince Harry next year.

By the standards of British royal protocol, the former Hollywood star lacks "royal blood".

This means Meghan will follow Catherine Middleton's suit of becoming Her Royal Highness, Princess Henry of Wales.
