MTV does away with gender-based awards, adds TV shows

MTV Awards - one of the biggest annual entertainment events – has stepped up its game by bringing in more socially-acceptable, non-gendered categories into its programme, against just males and females.

The award show will now be a more open platform for non-binary, queer, and gender non-conforming people, who will it find it convenient to not have to confine themselves to either male or female labels. It has also been progressing rapidly in line with the global societal trends since the cable and satellite television channel announced in March to add television series to its list of nominees by revising the event's name to MTV Movie & TV Awards.

So basically, Taraji Henson, Emma Watson, Hugh Jackman, and Daniel Kaluuya will all compete together for the top award – Best Actor in a Movie.

The news, however, has garnered mixed reactions from the film and arts space, despite the fact that the industry is notorious for being sexist and racist. While some feel this is more welcoming to everyone, others believe that it may lead to women being pushed backwards due to more artists contending for the same award.

Talking to CNNMoney about the latest developments, MTV president Chris McCarthy said, "We have to constantly be pushing ourselves to not only respond to culture but lead it."

McCarthy added that divisions that were before are now seen differently in the modern world, which is more active and aware of social issues. He commented, "They don't see those lines in the way that generations in the past have. So we wanted to take those down. They felt really antiquated."

Nevertheless, MTV's nominations this year are much more diverse, as can be seen here.

Other new categories that have been announced include Best Tearjerker, Best Host, Best Reality Competition, Best American Story, and Best Fight Against the System, the publication mentioned.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards are scheduled for May 7, 2017, with Adam DeVine as the host.
