Fabulous Works of Unver Shafi- 1st solo show after 12-year hiatus

KARACHI: Well known for his fabulist style, Karachi-based artist Unver Shafi Khan is in the limelight for his first solo show in over a decade.

The shape shifting quality found in fables and myths remains a lasting inspiration for his painterly works and is, thus, largely evident in the collection of acrylic miniature currently on display at Koel gallery.

Perhaps rooted in his passion for poetry and literature, Shafi continues to narrate his tales intentionally inflating fantastical elements. With incredibly surreal and dream like compositions characterized by blobs of colors varying from monochromes to vibrantly intense, this fabulist series on display is far from ordinary and unlike any seen around.

Developing a personal vocabulary through his untiring engagement with color and form, much of his career has been consumed by this fabulist approach, reveals Shafi discussing his long lasting focus which continues till today.

Fixated on his inspiration that comes from traditional fables his current works are, however, are comparatively larger in terms of size and scale, elaborates the artist talking about the eighteen acrylic paintings on display.

The delicate and thoughtful network of dots used to embellish the blob like forms representative or suggestive of human shapes, has been a relentless feature, he adds talking about the vocabulary specific to his abstract works over the years.

Born and raised in Karachi, Unver Shafi graduated in 1984 from Kenyon College, US with a BA in English Literature. With a career spanning nearly 25 years, his last solo exhibit was held in 2004.

Based on a selection of his works created between June 2015 and December 2016, the exhibition will remain open at Koel Gallery till February 2.

Hollywood producers name 'La La Land' the year's best film

Hollywood producers named the musical "La La Land" the best film of 2016 on Saturday at a ceremony marked by criticism of President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

The big win by "La La Land" at the 28th annual awards set up the film, which stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, as an odds-on Oscar favorite, after it scored a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations earlier this month.

The Producers Guild of America (PGA), which is among the leading industry organizations representing makers of movies and TV shows, also named its best animated film which went to "Zootopia," favorite documentary, won by "O.J.: Made in America" and honored Netflix's "Stranger Things" as the top television drama.

Musician John Legend, a star of "La La Land", criticized the new president's executive order placing curbs on people arriving in the United States from certain Muslim-majority countries, which spawned protests and confusion at several U.S. airports on Saturday. "We encourage everybody out there to speak out against it," Legend said.

Later, introducing the splashy, colorful musical film, Legend said "Our vision of America is directly antithetical to that of President Trump. I want to specifically tonight reject his vision and affirm that America has to be better than that."

Accepting the award, "La La Land" producer Marc Platt continued in a similar vein, saying "It is the power of cinema fueled by free artistic expression that cannot be denied, that has no borders, and will never be banned from our hearts, our minds and our souls."

In past years, PGA best film winners have often gone on to win the best picture Oscar, Hollywood's big prize.

Among other honors for television productions, two FX shows prevailed, as another look at the famous O.J. Simpson murder case, "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story," won the producers' award for long-form television and the comedy series award was won by "Atlanta."

Netflix's "Making a Murderer" won for non-fiction television, while NBC's "The Voice" took home the prize for reality competition series and PBS' "Sesame Street" scored for children's program.

Outstanding sports program went to "World of Sports," while "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver" won the live entertainment and talk television award.

The Academy Awards will be bestowed on Feb. 26 to producers, directors, actors and actresses by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The SRK-Mahira starrer also became one of Shah Rukh Khan's top five earning films, while Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil secured a place in the latter's highest five projects.

Raees is Mahira's debut project in Bollywood. It's an action-packed film in which King Khan is romancing the Pakistani starlet.

Shah Rukh Khan portrays a famous bootlegger in the film with Nawazuddin playing the role of an adamant policeman trying to hunt him down.

SRK, AbRam's sweet conversation will brighten your day

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his little munchkin AbRam are undoubtedly one of the sweetest dad-son duos of Bollywood, and their latest interaction didn't go unnoticed.

Captured during the filming of a video interview, Shah Rukh Khan and AbRam are seen engaged in a very cute moment, where the young Khan tells the Bollywood icon about how his thumb aches. Immediately, the loving father calls him over to the set, and caresses and kisses the child's fingers, which seems to bring his world back to normal.

"Now it's fixed?" SRK asks, and little AbRam responds, "Yes, it's fixed."

Interspersing the conversation with motor sounds with his mouth, the Bollywood romance king then says, "Now we're going shooting, okay? In the open car." And the tiny human replies, "Papa, I'm ready"

SRK then comments, "I'm also ready. Same same, we're ready to go. Ready to rock 'n' roll. I love you!"

Towards the end, Shah Rukh Khan entertains AbRam with some finger magic tricks, and resumes his interview.

AbRam made rounds online earlier as well, when it was disclosed that he urged his father with 'go pappa go' chants as he watched SRK-Mahira Khan-starrer Raees. He also loves dancing to the song Laila Main Laila whenever it plays.

Watch: 'Badrinath Ki Dulhania' teaser is out and has us in fits!

Soon-to-be-released Indian film Badrinath Ki Dulhania's first official teaser is out!

The brief video clip features Badrinath Bansal, played by Varun Dhawan, posing in what is apparently his first photo-shoot. He looks nervous, and is repetitively told to fix his posture.

Badri's smile, position, dressing, and finally his constant foot-tapping are criticised by a voice behind the camera, leading him to take his shoe off and throw it at the screen through the fourth wall.

Badrinath introduces himself by stating his full name. He then proceeds to awkwardly mention his nickname – Badri.

The funniest part is the cutouts of Kareena Kapoor Khan and Deepika Padukone as both stand sentinel at Badri's sides.

The lead actors – Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan – who are pairing up for their third Bollywood project together, also expressed their excitement at the teaser's release, and tweeted to their fans.

A few promotional pictures of Badrinath Ki Dulhania have been released, wherein the two stars are garbed in Holi attires and colours.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is an upcoming romantic comedy movie from the B-world, trailer of which is slated for February 2, 2017. Shashank Khaitan has directed the latest flick in the Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania series, and Dharma Productions' Hiroo Johar, Karan Johar, and Apoorva Mehta are its producers.

Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal will be lending their voices to the film's soundtrack.

On Sunday, Alia and Varun shared an adorable video on their Twitter accounts.

The movie is slated for a March-10 release.

Check out the trailer here:

'Hidden Figures,' 'Fences' lead politically-charged SAG awards

LOS ANGELES: Hidden Figures was the surprise best film ensemble winner at Sunday's Screen Actors Guild awards, a show overshadowed by politics, as stars slammed US President Donald Trump for restricting entry for travelers from seven Muslim-majority nations.

Hidden Figures, the true story of three black female mathematicians during the 1960s space race, ousted awards front-runners Manchester By the Sea and Moonlight to claim the night's top prize.

"This story is about what happens when we put our differences aside and we come together," star Taraji P. Henson said. "Thank you for appreciating these women, they are hidden figures no more," she added.

Fences, based on August Wilson's award-winning stage play about blue-collar African-Americans, claimed two major acting awards.

With awards darling La La Land out of the running for the top SAG prize for best ensemble, the win put Hidden Figures firmly into the race for the best picture Oscar, the top accolade in the film industry.

Voted for by about 120,000 US actors, the two-hour televised SAG awards show often anoints top Academy Award winners since actors comprise the largest body within Oscar voters.

A surprised Denzel Washington won best actor for Fences, beating out front-runners Casey Affleck for Manchester By the Sea and Ryan Gosling for La La Land.

Washington's co-star Viola Davis, who won best supporting actress, thanked the late playwright Wilson for honoring "the average man, who happened to be a man of color."

The SAG awards honored many actors of color in a year when diversity in Hollywood has been in the spotlight. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced seven Oscar nominees of color among its acting categories this month after two years, when only white actors were nominated, prompting the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.

Politics took center stage at the SAG awards as many stars delivered fiery speeches to directly or indirectly criticize Trump's ban on Muslim travelers.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who won best comedy TV actress for playing flawed fictional US President Selina Meyer on HBO's political satire Veep, called Trump's ban a "blemish."

"Because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes, and this immigrant ban is a blemish," she said. "It is un-American."

Mahershala Ali, who won best supporting actor for his role in independent drama Moonlight, noted that he is the Muslim son of a mother who is a Christian minister.

"She didn't do backflips when I called her to tell her I converted 17 years ago, but I tell you now, we put things to the side," he said.

Emma Stone, winning best actress for musical romance La La Land, praised her fellow actors for "reflecting society."

"We're in a tricky time in the world and in our country, and things are very inexcusable and scary and need action," she said. "And I'm so grateful to be part of a group of people that care and want to reflect things back to society."

Netflix dominated the top television wins, as women's' prison show Orange is the New Black won best comedy ensemble, British royal family show The Crown took the best actor and actress awards for a drama, and new 1980s sci-fi mystery series Stranger Things won best drama ensemble.

Miss France Iris Mittenaere crowned Miss Universe 2017

MANILA: Miss France was crowned Miss Universe on Monday in a made-for-television spectacle free of last year´s dramatic mix-up but with a dash of political controversy as the finalists spoke out on the refugee crisis and other hot-button global issues.

Iris Mittenaere, a dental surgery student from Lille in the north of France, beat 85 of the world´s most beautiful women at the event in the Philippines scheduled for primetime viewing in the United States.

Mittenaere, 24, edged out Miss Haiti, the first runner-up, and Miss Colombia the second runner-up.

AFP

In the final question round, Miss France highlighted the benefits of open borders when asked about the global refugee crisis.

"In France we want to have the most globalisation that we can. We want to have the biggest exchange of people that we can. Maybe someday that will change but now we have open borders," Mittenaere said.

"Having open borders allows us to travel more through the world and to find out more about what´s out there in the world."

Miss Kenya, another finalist, said Donald Trump´s presidency "may not have been the choice of many people" and divided the United States.

She also spoke out in support of former US president Barack Obama and said she backed Hillary Clinton to be America´s first woman president.

"I feel once he took up his position, he was able to unify the entire nation," said Mary Esther Were, 27.

Miss Colombia appeared to allude to Trump when asked why violence was prevalent in the world.

"Although there are presidents who don´t get along with others, we work together to unite. Campaigns, respect and inclusivity to be able to have a social transformation that would educate our children," said Andrea Tovar, 23.

Monday´s show was headlined by US performers including Grammy award-winning rhythm and blues group Boyz II Men and rapper and Grammy award nominee Flo Rida.

Pia Wurtzbach of the Philippines won last year following a major blunder in which the host -- Emmy Award winner Steve Harvey -- mistakenly awarded the title to Miss Colombia.

Harvey corrected the error minutes later, apologising on air to Wurtzbach and Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez.

The mistake featured prominently on Monday´s show, with candidates and the home audience often ribbing Harvey about it.

"Steve, I never got to thank you but thank you for making me the most popular Miss Universe," Wurtzbach told Harvey at the opening of show.

Harvey this year got through the closing moments of the ceremony smoothly.

Pageant fanatics

The Philippines agreed to host the pageant as part of efforts to draw tourists and investors.

Beauty pageants are also hugely popular in the Philippines, particularly among the tens of millions of poor who see the contests as a chance for their beautiful compatriots to live a life of fame and luxury.

But allowing the Philippines to host has proved controversial, with critics claiming the pageant would whitewash Duterte´s brutal drug war, which has left more than 6,000 people dead.

Environmentalists also hit out at pageant organisers for letting the bikini-clad contestants swim last month with endangered whale sharks.

Despite the controversies, excited fans from across the globe lined up before dawn to watch the pageant, which was held in the morning Manila time for the coveted prime American evening viewing audiences.

Fans dressed in evening gowns with a sash took selfies outside the seaside arena where the competition was held while others organised viewing parties in hotels and restaurants in the capital.

Shyamalan's 'Split' rules North American box office for second week

LOS ANGELES: "Split," the latest M. Night Shyamalan thriller about a man who imprisons three teenage girls in an underground bunker, topped the North American box office for a second week, preliminary Hollywood figures showed Sunday.

The movie -- by the Indian-American director also responsible for the "Sixth Sense" and other films in the horror genre -- stars James McAvoy as a man with 23 different personalities who preys on three girls. It earned $26.3 million in estimated ticket sales this weekend.

Family-friendly "A Dog's Purpose" about a canine who continually comes back to life as different dogs searching for meaning, raked in some $18.4 million in its first week.

The film came in second despite a call by animal lovers for a boycott after video footage emerged of an apparently terrified German Shepherd being forced into rushing water on the set.

Third place went to "Hidden Figures," the true-life story of three black women mathematicians who helped NASA put the first men in space, which sold $14.0 million in tickets.

Sci-fi action-thriller "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" landed in fourth place with $13.9 million in its first weekend out.

In fifth place was "La La Land," a nostalgic tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals. It earned an estimated $12.1 million over the weekend after garnering a boatload of accolades, including a record eight Golden Globes earlier this month.

Rounding out the Top 10 are:

"xXx: Return of Xander Cage" ($8.3 million)

"Sing" ($6.2 million)

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" ($5.1 million)

"Monster Trucks" ($4.1 million)

"Gold" ($3.5 million)

Iran's Oscar-winning director to skip awards over Trump visa ban

TEHRAN: Oscar-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi said Sunday he will not attend next month's Academy Awards, comparing President Donald Trump's visa ban on seven Muslim countries to the actions of hardliners in his own country.

Farhadi, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film for "The Salesman", said in a statement carried by Iranian news agencies that he had initially planned to attend the ceremony in Los Angeles, but had been forced to change his mind.

Trump signed an executive order on Friday prohibiting entry to the United States to all nationals of seven Muslim-majority states -- Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
"I neither had the intention to not attend nor did I want to boycott the event as a show of objection, for I know that many in the American film industry and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are opposed to the fanaticism and extremism which are today taking place more than ever," Farhadi said in his statement, which also was published Sunday in the New York Times, among other major newspapers around the world.

"However, it now seems that the possibility of this presence is being accompanied by ifs and buts which are in no way acceptable to me even if exceptions were to be made for my trip."

He said hardliners in both Iran and the United States acted with the same mentality.

"For years on both sides of the ocean, groups of hardliners have tried to present to their people unrealistic and fearful images of various nations and cultures in order to turn their differences into disagreements, their disagreements into enmities and their enmities into fears.

"Instilling fear in the people is an important tool used to justify extremist and fanatic behaviour by narrow-minded individuals," he said.

His lead actress, Taraneh Alidoosti, had already announced last week that she would boycott the awards over Trump's "racist" visa ban.

Farhadi won the best foreign language Oscar in 2012 for his film "A Separation".

Watch: Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan share goofy video on Twitter

Alia Bhatt always looks like the prankster-loving kid, and she proves it in this new video depicting herself and Varun Dhawan.

As Dhawan sits pensively, decked in Holi colours and a sleeveless vest, pondering something we are not aware of, Alia Bhatt desperately tries to catch his attention. First, she pinches the actor's earlobe.

When Alia's first attempt turns futile, she tries once more – this time inserting her finger in Dhawan's ear, to which the star reacts irritably.

The 23-year-old stunner flaunts a shimmering gown, coupled with straight hair adorning her shoulders.

Towards the end, they shout out a surprise: that Badrinath Ki Dulhania's first teaser trailer will be released tomorrow. At 11 AM Indian time.

A soon-to-be-released Bollywood romcom, Badrinath Ki Dulhania has been produced by Karan Johar. Alongside Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan, it stars Gauhar Khan as well, and is the second iteration after Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania.

Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal will be lending their voices to the film's soundtrack.

In addition, Varun and Alia are all prepped to appear on Koffee with Karan's next episode to promote the movie.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania is expected to hit cinemas on March 10.

In this regard, producer Ritesh Sidhwani commented, "It has been a perfect combination. It seems that all efforts have come to fruition. Hence, we want to celebrate this occasion with everyone who has been part of this journey," according to the news outlet.

Deepika, Ranveer, others slam attack on Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor – lead stars in upcoming Bollywood drama film Padmavati – have bashed the alleged attack on director Sanjay Leela Bhansali by voicing their shock and disappointment on Twitter.

Many in the B-world family have lashed out against the attack, condemning the violence towards Bhansali, and requesting action against the perpetrators.

Deepika expressed her sadness at what transpired at Padmavati set, and said that claims of twisting Khilji's story are baseless. She mentioned that the film promotes "courageous and powerful woman in the purest form there is."

Ranveer Singh, who brings emperor Alauddin Khilji to life in the movie, commented that the film's team has been very understanding of the Rajput community's emotions, and doesn't intend to hurt them. He hopes that they will gather more support hereon.

Shahid Kapoor slammed the current state of affairs, and noted that "violence is unacceptable. This incident has shocked me." The icon resented his absence from the set at the time when Bhansali was assaulted.

Among those who criticised the alarming incident were Mahesh Bhatt, Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Kabir Khan, Parineeti Chopra, and Sunidhi Chauhan.

In addition, Farhan Akhtar, Abhishek Bachchan, and Karan Johar refrained from suppressing their anger, and verbally whipped the assailants.

On the other hand, Sonam Kapoor instead appealed to Prime Minister Modi, underscoring that such incidents are "disheartening" for the artists, and just action should be taken.

Twitter soon started filling up with the hashtag #IstandbySLB, showing support for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who, according to latest reports in Indian media, has decided to go back to Mumbai and continue shooting elsewhere.

India Today stated that Bhansali was "members of a fringe outfit called Karni Sena" beat up the director for misrepresenting Khilji dynasty's tales. Although rumours on media hinted at a romantic scene between Rani Padmini (Deepika Padukone) and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh), Padmavati team and top management has declined all such allegations.

In response, Film & Television Producers Guild of India also vehemently condemned the violent attack, saying "the dastardly act of vandalism and assault […] is extremely unfortunate, deplorable, and totally unacceptable to the Indian film industry," according to Hindustan Times.

Although the director did not file any complaints or register a case, security authorities have arrested some people with regard to this case, local media says.

Earlier, Jodhaa Akbar faced severe disapproval from the Rajput community, and was not allowed to be released in the state.

I'm no Trump, says battle-hardened sponsor of Miss Universe in Manila

Luis Singson, a larger-than-life Filipino tycoon who has brought the Miss Universe pageant to Manila, has much in common with the man who owned the franchise two years ago: U.S. President Donald J. Trump.

Both men are immensely wealthy and are immersed in politics. Both have a cologne named after them. And, in their own countries, both are synonymous with a globally televised beauty contest that has often been buffeted by politics.

Singson, a provincial police chief who survived bloody gunbattles in a family feud and then became a governor, however says he doesn't see himself as a Trump in the making.

"We're very different," Singson said in an interview at his Manila mansion, its walls hung with photos of him posing with wild animals he has hunted and killed. "I'm going to give away my money. I don't think Trump can do that."

Singson's LCS Group of Companies said it has paid $13 million in a one-off deal to bring Miss Universe to the Philippines, where the contest will be held on Monday morning to cater to Sunday night TV audiences in the West. It will be carried on the Fox network in the United States.

Singson, long-time governor of the northern Philippine province of Ilocos Sur before handing over to his son in 2013, amassed a fortune through agriculture, mining and transport. He hopes the beauty pageant will boost tourism and banish ugly headlines about his country's bloody war on drugs.

"We might lose a little but it's good for our country, good for our business," he told Reuters. "This is the best vehicle to promote the Philippines."

Even so, says Singson, his deal with the Miss Universe Organisation, which Trump part-owned as recently as 2015, almost fell apart after Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte took office in June.

Duterte launched a campaign against drugs that has since killed about 7,000 people, mostly users and small-time dealers.

When the United States expressed concern about the campaign, Duterte denounced then President Barack Obama as a "son of a bitch." Soon after, Obama scrapped planned talks with Duterte on the sidelines of a regional summit in Laos.

All this unnerved the Miss Universe organisers and the contest was on the verge of cancellation, said Singson. The organisers declined to comment on Singson's version of events, but said a solution was eventually found.

Singson supports Duterte and the anti-drug campaign and says the Philippines is "much safer" because of it.

In 2015, U.S. broadcasters NBC and Univision ended their association with the Miss Universe contest after Trump, then campaigning to become the Republican Party's presidential candidate, called some Mexican immigrants "rapists."

Miss Universe returned to haunt Trump's presidential campaign last year, when Hillary Clinton criticised him for making derogatory remarks about the weight gain of a past winner, Alicia Machado.

Politics and Pageants

For Singson - better known by his nickname 'Chavit' - the pageant is a high point in a picaresque career. He also believes it is a shrewd investment.

Singson plans to expand his airline, Platinum Skies, which currently has four 32-passenger Dornier aircraft, and his bus company to capitalise on what he hopes will be a post-pageant surge in tourism.

Tourists are already visiting the Philippines in ever-greater numbers, particularly from China.

The Miss Universe contest will be a huge draw in the Philippines as well, where such pageants are closely followed. Imelda Marcos, the widow of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, is a former beauty queen. So is Duterte's long-time partner, Honeylet Avanceña, a nurse and businesswoman.

Philippine police officer Sofia Loren Deliu, known as the "Beauty Queen Cop," reportedly joined Duterte's security detail after participating in the Miss Earth contest.

One Manila congressman has urged Duterte to declare Monday a national holiday so that more people might watch the pageant. The reigning Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach, is a Filipina.

Animal Welfare

Over the decades, Singson has promoted many politicians, including boxing legend Manny Pacquiao, now a senator.

Singson has also helped topple others, most notably former President Joseph Estrada.

In 2000, Singson revealed that he handed over millions of pesos from an illegal numbers game to Estrada and his associates, accusations that eventually led to Estrada's ouster and conviction for corruption.

Singson said he has survived six ambush attempts by a private army run by his cousins. Sixteen enemies died in one shoot-out, he said, and a 2003 film called "Chavit" - which he co-wrote - suggests he picked them off one by one.

Asked if that was true, he said: "I don't know. It was an exchange of gunfire. I had to defend myself because I was ambushed at the time."

Singson travels the world to hunt big game, an expensive hobby that might horrify many of Miss Universe's 86 contestants who profess, in their official biographies, a passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare.

He said an elephant he shot in Zimbabwe cost $150,000 "just to kill", and tens of thousands of dollars to stuff and ship to his museum in Ilocos.

Displayed at his Manila mansion is a bloodstained shirt. Singson said he was wearing it when enemies threw grenades into a party he was attending in 1972, killing 11 people and wounding many more.

"Luckily I was dancing with a fat lady," he said. "She absorbed all the shrapnel."

The woman died in the attack, Singson said.
